As a ClassFlow user, you’re probably wondering how this affects you and your students. Here are some key takeaways:
What is iKeepSafe?
According to iKeepSafe, The iKeepSafe COPPA Safe Harbor Certification program ensures that the processes surrounding the gathering, use, maintenance and disclosure of personal information from children under the age of 13 are consistent with principles and requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Companies that abide by the guidelines are recognized with a badge, allowing parents and schools to easily identify products compliant with COPPA.
What is COPPA?
According to the Federal Trade Commission, COPPA imposes certain requirements on operators of online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age.
What is the Certification Process?
To receive the COPPA badge, iKeepSafe conducted a thorough manual and technical review of ClassFlow to assess its compliance with iKeepSafe Privacy Assessment guidelines. Once the privacy assessors concluded that the software compiled, ClassFlow received the COPPA badge and a product profile on iKeepSafe that summarizes and communicates how it protects student data privacy and security. There are several parts of this process:
- Manual Assessment: The first step in the assessment is for companies to provide iKeepSafe’s assessors with access to product and send documentation, including data questionnaires, privacy policies, sample contracts, and test logins.
- Technical Assessment: Following the manual assessment, iKeepSafe uses a series of proxy and web traffic analysis tools to reveal whether any third parties receive data from the product.
- Product Compliance: During the phase, the company will need to resolve any privacy or security gaps based on the outcomes of the manual and technical assessments.
Once a product has completed the full assessment, iKeepSafe will award privacy badges to signify their compliance with relevant law and regulations.
